Lectures & Trunk Shows by MartyO

"You inspired and facilitated all of us in the class in a way that made us feel confident enough to venture into new artistic territory. The ideas and possibilities you presented to us that cold Saturday have stayed simmering in my brain ever since! Thank you!"

M. Fennell

All lectures run for 1 hour, followed by a 30-minute Q&A. The lecture fee is $450 per presentation for any lecture listed below. Recording is not permitted.

Tattered Splendor: MartyO’s Wearable Art Ensembles
(Zoom or in-person lecture with trunk show)

Step into a world of texture and reinvention. In this lively presentation, I share a curated slideshow of my award-winning wearable art, all made from deconstructed vintage quilts and linens. You’ll get an inside look at my process: from zero-waste design principles to unconventional draping techniques—no patterns, just play! I’ll dish on creative problem-solving, the thrills of maximalist style, and the misadventures of making it up as I go. Plus, for a live presentation, you’ll see pieces from my collection up close in the trunk show.

Whispers from the Muse: Inside the Creative Mind
(Zoom or in-person lecture with trunk show)

Where do ideas come from—and where do they go when we’re stuck? In this visually rich and thought-provoking presentation, we’ll explore the mysteries of creativity: how it flows, why it stalls, and how to invite it back. Blending insights from artists, scientists, and my own studio practice, I offer fresh ways to reconnect with your creative parts.

Whether you’re feeling blocked or just hungry for more inspiration, you’ll come away with practical tools to boost your artistic output (especially when time is short!), along with something even more powerful: permission to make & break rules, embrace joyful messes, and trust your own voice.

Fashion Dangers: From Victorian to Vanguard
A Visual Lecture by MartyO

Behind every beautiful stitch lies a hidden story—and sometimes, a toxic one. This compelling lecture traces the shadowy side of fashion history, from arsenic-laced gowns of the Victorian era to today’s fast fashion catastrophes. We’ll travel through time exploring how style has endangered bodies, exploited labor, and scarred the environment.

Blending historical imagery with personal commentary, textile artist MartyO exposes the dark seams of fashion—from corsets that crushed ribs to dye chemicals that poisoned wearers and workers alike—while connecting these past harms to present-day issues like microplastics, synthetic waste, and the human cost of fast-fashion.

This talk is for anyone curious about the intersection of fashion, textiles, and history. With both gravity and wit, MartyO invites us to rethink fashion as something not only expressive, but also mindful—of people, materials, and the planet.

Worn, Torn, Reborn: Art Quilting Without a Map
(In-person lecture with trunk show only)

After discovering my artistic voice through wearable art, I returned to quilting with new eyes—and a beautifully rebellious heart. This presentation celebrates my no-rules approach to art quilting, where perfection is tossed aside in favor of curiosity, emotion, and bold experimentation.

Using repurposed, neglected, and abandoned textiles, I transform forgotten fabrics into works that blur the line between fine art and social commentary. I’ll share my creative process—what works, what fails spectacularly, and how the unexpected often leads to the most meaningful results. For anyone drawn to imperfection, reinvention, and making do with what you have, this talk is both an invitation and a permission slip: to explore bravely, and to welcome mistakes.

Art as Activism: Stitching for Change
(Zoom or in-person lecture with trunk show)

What happens when you cut into a hundred-year-old ruined quilt? For me, it sparked dialogue, connection, ethical reflection, and a deep dive into the power of textiles as a voice for change. As a retired attorney turned artist, I’ll explore how fiber art has long been used to elevate voices, support causes, and build community. I’ll discuss the censorship of textile artists where abstract textile pieces were removed after they were deemed too suggestive—and how the resulting backlash became a classic case of the “Streisand Effect.” Expect surprising stories, historical insights, and plenty of inspiration for making art that not only stands out—but speaks up. This presentation explores the power of cloth to challenge, heal, and inspire.

Jean-ius: The Art of Embellished Jackets
(Zoom or in-person lecture with trunk show)

Let’s talk denim—with attitude. In this engaging lecture, I share my personal story of transforming ordinary jackets into expressive, eye-catching works of wearable art. From subtle alterations and playful trims to dramatic bustles, bold epaulets, and theatrical flourishes, I’ll share how I turn secondhand finds into signature pieces that always earn compliments and spark conversation.

Rooted in a lifelong love of making-do with less, this talk is about more than just embellishment—it’s about confidence, creativity, and crafting fashion that reflects you. Whether you favor minimal touches or love maximal drama, you’ll leave inspired to raid your stash, scour thrift shops, and start stitching your own personal statement.

Bonus: This lecture pairs perfectly with my one-day Jean-ius Jacket Upcycling Workshop, where you’ll begin creating your own reinvented denim masterpiece.
